Ten years ago, the edge in investing belonged to people with access: to information, to analysts, to Bloomberg terminals. Today, that same access is available to anyone with an internet connection and a willingness to learn how to use AI tools.
The investors who thrive in the next decade won't just know finance. They'll know how to combine financial thinking with AI to research faster, analyse deeper, and act smarter. I believe this is the most important skill you can build right now.
What the Skill Actually Looks Like
This isn't about becoming a data scientist or learning to code. The AI + Investing skill set is much more practical:
- Using AI to compress research time. Reading an annual report used to take hours. With AI, you can get the key signals in 10 minutes.
- Building your own analysis tools. Portfolio trackers, expense ratio calculators, goal planners , things that used to require Excel expertise now take a single prompt.
- Asking better questions. AI is only as good as what you ask it. The real skill is knowing which questions to ask about a company, a fund, or a market.
- Staying ahead of information. AI can monitor news, filter noise, and surface what actually matters for your portfolio.
Why Most Indian Investors Are Missing This
I've spoken to hundreds of retail investors in India. Most know ChatGPT exists. Almost none are using it for their actual money decisions. The reason is simple: the available resources are either too generic (built for US investors) or too technical (built for developers).
There's a gap between "AI is powerful" and "here's how to use it for your SIPs on Zerodha." That's the gap I'm trying to close.
The investor who uses AI isn't replacing their judgment with a machine. They're using AI to do the time-consuming work , the reading, the calculation, the pattern-matching , so their judgment can focus on the decisions that actually matter.
Three Things You Can Start Doing This Week
You don't need to overhaul your entire investment process overnight. Start here:
- Summarise one annual report. Pick any company you hold or are curious about. Paste the MD&A section into ChatGPT and ask it to summarise the key growth and risk signals.
- Audit your SIP portfolio. Share your current fund holdings with an AI and ask it to check for overlap and high expense ratios. You might be surprised.
- Build a goal tracker. Tell an AI your financial goals, timeline, and current savings. Ask it to calculate how much you need to invest monthly to hit each goal.
This Is Still Early Days
The people who learn this now are doing what early internet users did in the 90s , getting comfortable with a tool that will eventually become standard. The difference is the timeline is much shorter this time. In 5 years, AI-assisted investing won't be a competitive advantage. It'll be the baseline.
The question isn't whether to learn this. It's whether you start now or catch up later.
